"FDW is a really tasty cookie, but there's this one chocolate chip that you can bite into that turns out to be a whole cake of dark chocolate hidden inside there and that's Wallis' dark route. It's dramatic, subverts the usual "player solves everything" trope of dating sims by taking the themes of submission and personal determination to extremes. It's also got the rare action story (through its journal entries) that dares to take itself seriously. It shows the costs of war and how war changes people. At the same time it's successful as a slice of life piece showing lived experience in its post-war world. [...] It offers valid critique of the inescapable superstructures of power that shape the lives of those within it. In this take, there's nothing one can do but surrender and be broken and fit into the mold of the Empire. Even if the reader isn't into being a pain slut (I'm not), there's still a super compelling narrative in this release."
